Day 2 at Junior Worlds

Originally posted on IPF social media on 25th August 2023

The equipped 52kg and 57kg women opened Day 2 of the Junior World Championships and this session combined the junior and sub-junior categories.

In the sub-jr 52kg class, Tetiana Muzychenko UKR and Eerika Palosaari FIN had a great battle, coming down to the final deadlifts with Palosaari taking it by 2.5kg.   Ninel Ablayeva was much further ahead in the 57s, hitting a 400kg total for the gold medal.

The juniors had a stressful session though, with many missed lifts.  Heart-breaking stuff but lessons will be learned.  In the 52kg class, Mariia Polianska UKR kept her focus and took her first junior world title as a result.

The junior 57kg class was a nail-biter with the leader, Bella Vargas USA, missing her opening deadlift twice.  She looked nervous as she approached the bar for her final pull and the crowd held their breath when the bar stalled out half way to the top.  But she was patient and determined, and carefully pulled it back in into lockout, securing her first world title.

The middle session today brought us an exciting finish in the 74kg sub-jr class.  Mizuki Saito JPN took a 20kg jump on his final deadlift to 240kg and absolutely smoked it to snatch the gold from Vladyslav Bilous UKR on bodyweight.

The Jr 74s were led by Min-Chun Huang TPE from the start.  Last year's champ, Nojus Cypas LTU had a nightmare on deadlift and couldn't keep him from the gold medal.

We finished the day with a mammoth session covering the 63kg and 69s classes.  Amina Karimova KAZ successfully defended her title in the Sub-Jr 63kg class and Katherine Cargill USA dominated on her way to win in the Sub-Jr 69s.

In the juniors, hot favourite, Emily Finnern GER, struggled on bench, and didn't get one on the board.   This opened up the competition in the 63kg class and Veronika Bordiuh UKR took full advantage to take the top step of the podium for the first time.

The 69s were closely fought with Laura Salazar Droege AUT and Yasmina Havnen NOR neck and neck going into final deads. Havnen hit her last pull at 187.5kg and forced Salazar to attempt a massive 192.5kg to get past.  Salazar got it moving but couldn't lock it out, handing the win to Havnen.

A great day of lifting with much more to come.
