Day 1 at Junior Worlds

Originally published on IPF social media on 24th August 2023

We kicked off the Junior World Championships today and the competition is already barrelling along at quite a pace with ten new world champions crowned.  Here's how it went.

In the first session, Jonathan Becerril USA collected all the gold medals on his way to victory in the sub-junior 53kg class but Anton Savkin UKR had a much closer battle with USA's Nicolas Calidonia in the 59s, ultimately finishing 5kg ahead for the sub-junior world title.

In the juniors, Andrei Georgescu ROM and Adarsh Attavar IND both notched up convincing back to back world titles in the 53kg and 59kg classes respectively.

Valeriia Koniukhova UKR took the first of the women's world titles in the sub-junior 43kg class and India picked up another world champion with Anjana Krishna VK taking gold in the 47s.

In the juniors, we had a one-two punch from the Philippines with Veronica Ompod (43kg) and Jessa Mae Tabuan (47kg) winning in some style, both around 50kg ahead of their nearest rival.  With nothing to lose, Ompod took a huge 15kg jump up to her 3rd deadlift of 165kg for a world record attempt but it was a little too much.

The last session of the day was the 66kg class.  In the sub-juniors, Dmytro Butenko UKR had a fight on his hands to stay ahead of R Dinesh IND but managed to snatch his second world title nonetheless.   In the juniors, Venkatesh Konar IND took the opportunity of being a long way ahead to try for a deadlift world record. It wasn't quite there this time but winning your first world title is powerful compensation.

What a cracking start to the 2023 Juniors Worlds!  What was your favourite bit from today?  let us know in the comments.
