Day 3 at Junior Worlds

Originally posted on IPF social media on 26th August 2023

We began Day 3 of Junior World with the equipped 83kg class, juniors and sub-juniors.

Davyd Rubets UKR followed in his big brother's footsteps, absolutely dominating the sub-junior class, finishing over 60kg ahead of second place.  It was a closer fight for Davide Cecchetti ITA and Lars Engo Monsen NOR though, trading blows in the junior category.  Cecchetti missed his 260kg second deadlift though which opened the way for Monsen who pulled ahead with a beautiful 272.5kg.  Cecchetti took the lead with his final deadlift but Monsen responded with his ninth good lift - a perfect day and his first world title.

The second session was a huge one, covering all the women's weight classes from 76kg upwards.  The sub-juniors lifted in the first flight and Ivanna Holinei sailed to her first world championship win in the 76kg class with a 447.5kg total.

The 84s had a real scrap with Mackenzie Wells USA and Reda Laurinavičiūtė LTU almost perfectly matched.  Wells pulled her final deadlift though, and Laurinavičiūtė could not match her.  Another newcomer, Daige Love USA put in a great performance for the win in the 84+kg class.

Juliane Slettnes NOR was on form after moving up to the junior 76kg category but came under a challenge from 2022 world champ Eleonora Pontoni ITA.  Pontoni had a fright on bench, only getting a successful one in on her third attempt.  That third was 170kg though which pulled back Slettnes' advantage.  Pontoni went past with her final deadlift but there was no stopping Slettnes who took an easy 182.5kg to take back first place.

Kateryna Muliar UKR was a long way ahead in the junior 84s but it was close in the 84+kg class.  Lara Hinz GER pulled for the win but couldn't quite lock it out, giving Tuva Lierhagen NOR the title.

The final session of a long day in Cluj Napoca, Romania was the 93kg class.  Vasyl Zbandut UKR ran away with the sub-junior category, and Ondřej Šíp CZE successfully defended his junior world title against last year's 83kg champion, Ludvik Moen NOR.  Moen made a heroic attempt at 310kg for his third to snatch the win but it was not on the cards.

We wrap up the equipped competition tomorrow with the men's heavy weight classes and then we will be straight on with the classic competition, opening with the 53kg class.
