We are going to see some massive numbers lifted in the 84+kg class at Classic Worlds and nominations could not be closer at the front:
Amélie Mierger FRA 647.5kg
Bonica Brown USA 647.5kg
Emelie Leach SWE 630kg
Brittany Schlater CAN 607.5kg
Anna-Lena Bellqvist SWE 601kg
The returning multiple-time world champion Bonica Brown is unbeaten at Classic Worlds and has notched up 6 world titles just in this category. She holds the squat and total world records and has previously totalled more than 670kg so she has to come in as the strong favourite, but this could be the biggest challenge she has faced to date.
Amélie Mierger took the bronze medal in Halmstad last year - she led the pack at sub-total but struggled with lockout on deadlift and slipped back to third place as a result. She took Bonica's bench world record at Euros in December with 153kg but has since benched more than 160kg at French nationals - 162.5kg in the three-lift competition and 165kg in the bench only competition. We are excited to see what she will bring to Sun City.
Emelie Leach was the silver medallist at Halmstad, only 5kg behind first place. She's put more than 20kg on her total since then, mostly on squat and she is in the fight for a podium place.
Reigning World Champion Brittany Schlater is nominated all the way back in fourth place which shows the standard this year. She took an easy day at Canadian nationals recently as it was so close to worlds so we don't really have a clear picture of where she is right now. One thing is for sure, she won't be giving it up without a fight.
Not far behind is Anna-Lena Bellqvist who finished just off the podium last year but she has pushed her total up by 20kg since then and is close behind the Canadian.
Don't miss Super Saturday - the last day of Classic Worlds - which will be livestreamed on the Olympic Channel and our facebook page and will also be broadcast live on Eurosport at 2.30pm South African time on 11th June.
