When you look through the nominations in the 120kg class, there is hardly anything to separate one lifter from the next right the way down the group. Here are the top 5:
Enrique Lugo USA 920kg
Erik Willis CAN 906kg
Bryce Krawczyk CAN 895.5kg
Carl Sommerseth NOR 885.5kg
Antti Kriikkula FIN 880kg
The last time we saw Enrique Lugo on the international stage, he was winning Equipped Junior Worlds in Regina, Canada but it seems he favours raw lifting these days and has made huge gains to come in at the top of the nominations.
Erik Willis won the world title in front of a home crowd in Calgary in 2018 but hasn't done better than the silver medal since then. He has been competing as a superheavyweight since Helsingborg in 2019, putting up totals in excess of 950kg but now he is back in the 120s it's difficult to predict what he will do.
He has team mate and deadlift world record holder Bryce Krawczyk right behind. In Halmstad, Bryce missed his last pull of 390.5kg by about a millimetre of lockout and missed out on a podium place as a result. He will be looking to rectify that this year. Interesting that the top three are all accomplished equipped lifters too.
Carl Petter Sommerseth (another equipped lifter!) and Antti Kriikkula are close behind on nominations and it would only take one slip, a single failed lift from one of the leaders for one of them to shoot past and gain a spot on the podium.
