The 105kg class promises to be a corker! Let’s take a look at the top 5 nominations:
Emil Norling SWE 917.5kg
Anatolii Novopismennyi UKR 915kg
Corentin Clement FRA 895kg
Michael Davis USA 892.5kg
Rene Caky SUI 891kg
Three time world champion, Anatolii Novopismennyi took the best lifter award at Halmstad last year. He holds the squat world record in two weight classes and the total world record in the 105s. We hope Anatolii will get the opportunity to compete and defend his title and we hope every day for peace for our friends and colleagues in Ukraine.
Former junior world champion Emil Norling however, is still looking for his first open world title. Emil has been gaining momentum like crazy, notching up European titles and adding kilos to all three lifts. Notably, his only loss in recent years has been to Anatolii in Halmstad at Classic Worlds, a result that he reversed at the Europeans in December, pulling a phenomenal 375kg deadlift to snatch the win.
The battle for the podium is just as fierce further down the pack. Still a junior, Clement finished third in the open last time out. Holder of many junior and sub-junior world records, he is improving fast and that big deadlift will be a threat at the endgame.
Michael Davis has been away from the international scene since Calgary in 2018, but he’s been busy, putting nearly 50kg on his total in that time. With bench press world record hold Rene Caky hot on his heels, and a couple of relatively new young Brits right behind, we are going to see fireworks in Sun City.
If you can’t be there, make sure to watch the livestream - going out on the Olympic Channel and our facebook page on 10th June.
