Is the 57kg class the most stacked class of all? Here are the nominations:
Joy Nnamani GBR - 492.5kg
Bobbie Butters GBR - 475.5kg
Maria Htee CAN - 472.5kg
Evie Corrigan NZL - 467.5kg
Jade Jacob FRA - 465.5kg
Current World Champion, Joy Nnamani, has to be the favourite. Ahead on nominations, 3 time world champion, undefeated since 2018, she’s held world records in two weight classes and two age classes and is the current world record holder in deadlift and total in the 57s. Joy came so close to 500lb deadlift and 500kg total at the recent British nationals - can she nail it this time? Or will she have to defend hard against the rest of the field right behind?
Bobbie Butters has the squat world record in this class and recently exceeded it comfortably at British nationals in March. Bobbie has a big bench as well - can she push that massive sub-total high enough to hold off the big deadlifters? Including Maria Htee, who was the 57kg world champion in 2019 and set world records in squat and total too. She squeaked ahead of Bobbie for the silver medal in Halmstad but these two are so evenly matched, it’s going to go down to the line.
Podium places are not secure though. 2018 Junior World Champion Evie Corrigan is back and she is right up there with the front runners, only 5kg behind Maria. A Junior World Record holder, Evie has been steadily improving since we last saw her in Helsingborg and this will be her first worlds in the open. Jade Jacob however, is STILL a junior - 2021 Junior World Champion in fact and holder of a ton of Junior World Records. She’s been gaining momentum like crazy and there’s no telling what she can do in South Africa.
With the world recorder holder in bench, Donna Berglund, also competing, you won’t want to be anywhere else in the world on 7th June. If you can’t be there in person, watching the livestream in glorious HD will be the next best thing - livestreamed on the Olympic Channel, our facebook page and, in part, on Eurosport.
