Thrills and spills in the first session on Day 3 of the combined Sub-junior, Junior and Masters World Championships in Romania.
In the sub-junior 66kg class, two lifters failed to make a bench press, handing the world championship title to Rozmatkhozha Tursynbayev of Kazakhstan.
The sub-junior 74kg had a nail biting finish with the Ukrainian, Dmytro Sivakov, pulling a huge 245kg deadlift to snatch victory from his team mate, Illia Sytnik.
Redha Al-Sarray of Iraq pulled for the overall gold in the junior 74kg class but couldn’t quite make the lift, leaving Vladislav Iushchenko with the title.
Ilia Marichev from Russia was absolutely dominant in the 66kg junior class, taking gold across the board. He broke the bench press junior world record with his second press of 212.5kg and then extended it further with 218kg. An attempt to take the junior world total record with his first pull of 285kg went awry when his grip failed. However, he pulled it easily on his second attempt and then came out for 300kg which would have given him the junior deadlift world record AND the open total world record as a junior lifter. Although unsuccessful, it was a close thing and he gave us a very exciting finish to the session.
