Session two on the first day of the open saw the lightweight men take to the platform.
There were only two lifters in the 59kg class but one of them was 8 time world champion Sergei Fedosienko. He had a relatively sedate run out, taking a small squat PB at 230kg and collecting a chestful of gold medals and the world title with a 640kg total. Evgenii Mukhomedianov in second place took the M1 world record total with 562.5kg.
The 66kg class was a much anticipated battle between France’s Panagiotis Tarinidis and ROC’s Sergei Gladkikh. They were exactly matched at sub-total and the World Championship Title went down to the final deadlift with Tarinidis eventually winning out by 5kg with a 692.5kg total.
