The 57kg brought the fire in the last session of Day One of the open competition.
Reigning champion Maria Htee of Canada was closely matched with GB’s deadlift queen, Joy Nnamani and up-and-coming Brit Bobbie Butters on nominations. Bobbie stole a march on both by squatting a beautiful world record of 180.5kg, taking it from Maria. Joy struggled on squat, only getting her opener after having her later squats failed for supporting elbows on her legs.
Donna Berglund upheld the family name by taking the bench gold medal but her attempt at a world record of 121.5kg didn’t come off the chest. Bobbie took silver with 105kg, giving her the lead at sub-total with Maria 8kg behind and Joy trailing by another 17.5kg.
However, you can’t bet against the deadlift queen and Joy opened her deadlift on a world record of 205.5kg and then extended it to an incredible 220.5kg. Both Htee and Butters nailed all three deadlifts but neither could catch Joy who totalled a world record 480.5kg, giving her world records in deadlift and total in two weight classes.
