Day seven of the championships was day one of the open competition at Classic Worlds. The 47kg class led us out and immediately provided high drama. 20 year old Tiffany Chapon of France squatted junior world records with her first and second attempts but couldn’t quite manage to take We-Lin Chen’s long standing open world record with her third at 153kg. However, these records and the lead in the competition were suddenly in doubt when Tiffany missed her opening bench and then timed out on her second due to not having her hair tied up (so that the referees could see if her head came off the bench). Her third attempt was successful, however, and her world championship campaign got back on the rails with a junior world record deadlift (165kg) and total (397.5kg). Canada’s Simone Lai won out over Kazhakstan’s Veronika Broner on bodyweight for the silver medal, both totalling 372.5kg.
In the 52s, favourite to win Noemie Allabert of France had a nervous moment when team-mate Shizuka Rico attempted a world record deadlift of 198kg to beat her by half a kilo but it didn’t budge from the floor and an emotional Allabert was crowned World Champion. Special mentions go to Pleun Dekkers who came close to a world record squat of 161kg but ground to a halt half way up. And Barbara Gapp who successfully pulled a Masters 1 world record at 190kg but couldn’t get the open world record moving.
An exciting start to the open competition!
