IPF World Bench 2021 - equipped open lightweight men

The open equipped men went into battle on day 3 of the World Bench Press Championships with the lighter weight classes lifting in the morning session.

In the 59kg class, only Oleg Smirnov of ROC got his opening attempt and, despite a 207.5kg hail Mary attempt by Ihor Harashchenko of Ukraine, Oleg’s second at 205kg was enough to carry the day.
Japan’s Masashi Fukuda struggled in the 66s, only getting his first lift passed which opened the door to Kazakhstan’s Abdulkarim Karaman who went 3/3 and took the silver with his third attempt of 237.5kg. Neither man could catch Ian Urusov of ROC though who took the opportunity for a world record attempt of 250.5kg on his third. A change in elected position mean he was not successful today but a world title is a powerful consolation prize.
The legendary Daiki Kodama looked to be in trouble in the 74s when the jury overturned his 282.5kg second attempt for lockout, allowing Ivan Chuprynko of Ukraine to sneak into the lead. Ivan’s third bench of 290kg was unsuccessful however, and Kodama nailed 287.5kg for his umpteenth world title and a new masters 1 world record.
In the 83kg class, hot favourite Oleg Butenko (KAZ) failed to register a successful attempt, leaving ROC’s Stanislav Butsin, the only man to make three successful attempts, with the gold medal.
The 93kg class was shaping up to be an exciting contest with Askar Shokhanov of Kazakhstan opening only 1kg shy of the world record with 350kg. However, he missed all three attempts with the weight – the third looked like he might have had it but he just couldn’t keep his hips down and was failed for a change in elected position. Andrii Krymov (UKR) was in the lead after the second round with his opener of 310kg but couldn’t improve on it and ROC’s Valentin Kiselev snatched the gold with 312.5kg on his third.
Equipped bench press often delivers an exciting and unpredictable session and this was a great example.
