The open equipped women benched on Day 3 of the World Bench Press Championships.
Yana Zadorina (ROC) ran away with the 47kg class with 115kg but we saw a two way tussle in the 52s between Ukraine’s Oksana Vedmid and ROC’s Alena Goncharenko. Both missed their opener but came back strong in the second round. Goncharenko missed her third however, handing the title to Vedmid.
Larisa Kotkova of ROC was a long way out in front in the 57kg class but missed a world record attempt of 166kg. In the 63s, Solbakken of Norway made a spirited attempt to snatch the victory from Viktoria Yultsova of ROC but couldn’t quite pull it off.
High drama in the 69kg class as the strong favourite Sonja-Stefanie Krueger struggled. She asked for a world record of 182.5kg to be loaded to the bar for her opening attempt but her bench shirt visibly slipped up her chest and folded itself over, giving her nothing for the press. She came out for her second with a belt on and went up 2.5kg but still could not press it. Even a change of shirt for her third could not save the day and she failed to make a successful attempt. Meanwhile, Matilda Vilmas (SWE) looked incredibly strong all the way through, going 3 for 3 and taking Krueger’s world record with 178.5kg along with the gold medal.
In the 76s, no one really got close to Xeniya Khan of Kazakhstan and Liudmila Protcheno of ROC dominated the 84s, opening on a PB of 207.5kg which was turned down by the jury for a change in elected position. She nailed it on her second however which left her open to try for a world record with 213.5kg It didn’t quite come off but it looked like it will be there very soon indeed and the best lifter award must have been a nice consolation prize.
Veteran Ielja Strik (NED) was superb in the 84+kg class, taking the lead in the second round when Yana Pokazaneva (ROC) missed 185kg. In the third round, Ielja absolutely smoked 185kg, more than she has pressed in competition for some years, taking the win as Yana missed her attempt for the title with 187.5kg.
With four world champions, ROC took the team award in this fast-paced session.
