The 2023 World Equipped Championships kicked off in grand style here in Druskininkai, Lithuania with the 59kg class.

Franklin Leon ECU, who recently turned 40, hit a new M1 squat world record with 285kg which gave him a great position to fend off a strong challenge from Yi-Chun Lin TPE.  Lin struggled on squat, only getting his second but Leon missed his second and third bench which left him in range of Lin.  Leon played a smart game, hit all his deadlifts and added 25kg to the M1 total world record.  Lin made a brave attempt at a 262.5kg deadlift to snatch victory but it was just a little too heavy.

1  Franklin Leon ECU - 690kg

2  Yi-Chung Lin TPE - 672.5kg

3  Chen-Ting Wu TPE - 655kg

The second session was the combined 47kg and 52kg classes.  In the 47s, Tetiana Bila made a strong start with a European squat record of 190kg. She took the bench gold too which made her unassailable, even against Paulina Szymanel hitting a European deadlift record of 175kg.

1  Tetiana Bila UKR - 460kg

2  Paulina Szymanel POL - 440kg

3  Mei-Xiang Liu TPE - 387.5kg

Team Ukraine made it a one-two finish with Anastasiia Derevianko winning in the 52kg class.   Although her squats were strong, she missed depth on her second and third and Su Yi-Jie TPE took the squat gold with 190kg.  Gerlyn Maepea EST took the bench gold with 130kg and Emma Goodwin had the deadlift gold with 187.5kg after narrowly missing a world record attempt of 195.5kg.

2  Laura Savolainen SWE - 470kg

3  Carmen Bueno ECU - 455kg

At the end of Day 1, Ukraine leads the women’s team competition and Ecuador leads the men’s.  It’s early days though and we have the 66kg, 74kg and 57kg classes all lifting tomorrow.
