Day 6 at Junior Worlds

What an amazing day we had at the World Juniors in Romania, starting with the 66kg class.

Daniel Harris USA ran away with the sub-junior category, breaking the sub-junior squat world record with 230.5kg and the sub-junior total world record with 605.5kg.  That's not all - Matheo Duvernet FRA broke the sub-junior deadlift world record with 256.5kg and celebrated with a backflip on the platform.

The junior 66kg class wasn't as clear-cut though.  Tristan Ho SGP led at sub-total, ahead of Taiga Sato JPN and Kyle Nowak USA.  However, Nowak dropped his deadlift opener to 185kg and then did not come out for it, seemingly opening the way for the rest of the field.  In the second round of deadlifts, Tuan Hien Tran CAN pulled 288kg for the junior deadlift world record.  Nowak then made an appearance and made short work of 302.5kg for an OPEN world record.  Undettered, Tran came out for 307.5kg for his final pull and took the open world record back, pulling himself all the way up to fourth place in the process.  Nowak attempted 308kg but it sprang from his grasp at the top and he had to settle for the junior world title.  What an exciting finish.

The middle session was the women's junior 52kg and 57kg classes and they had some world records of their own.  In the 52s, Joya Khairallah LBN got off to a shaky start on squats and was hard pressed by last year's winner, Camille Hadrys FRA.  Hadrys broke the junior world record with 183kg for her final pull, moving her into the lead by half a kilo.  Khairallah responded with 183.5kg, taking the win AND the record.

The junior 57s was a running battle from the start with the lead changing hands several times. Helena Mariella Decker GER took charge once deadlifts started, leaving the rest of the field to duke it out behind her.  In the end, only 10kg covered 2nd to 7th place with the silver and bronze medals decided on bodyweight.

We closed the day with the sub-junior 63s and we saw a great performance from Juuli Kostian FIN.  She broke the sub-junior squat record with 160.5kg and the sub-junior bench press record with 98.5kg on her way to victory.

A brilliant day's lifting with plenty more to come.
