IPF Classic World Championships - 84+kg class preview

Originally published on IPF social media on 9th June 2023

The 84+kg class lifts on Super Sunday, the final day of the Classic World Championships and this might well be the most anticipated class of all.  Let's take a look at the nominations.

Bonica Brown   USA   680kg

Brittany Schlater   CAN   662kg

Sonita Muluh   BEL   661kg

Amélie Mierger   FRA   647.5kg

Jewel Tasi   NZL   621kg

Bonica Brown has been the undisputed queen of this class for some time.  She has only missed one classic world championships since 2014 and she is undefeated at this competition.  She also lifts equipped and has four open class World Titles in that arena too.  At the Sheffield Powerlifting Championships earlier this year, she squatted 280kg - more than any other women in the IPF.   At that same event, she also totalled more that any other raw woman in the IPF with 680kg.  She holds the squat and total world records both raw and equipped.  Truly she is a legend in the sport and has dominated for years.

However, new challengers have arisen.  The 2021 world champion, Brittany Schlater is nominated with the 662.5kg she did at Canadian nationals.  This is a HUGE jump from her total at worlds last year, where she finished in 4th place after a tough day on deadlift.  If Bonica has an uncharacteristic off day, Brittany will be right there to capitalise.

She's not the only one though.  Sonita Muluh is a single kilo behind Brittany on nominations and she has since squatted 15kg more in training.  If she has recovered sufficiently from injury, she could well mount a serious challenge on the super heavyweight throne.

Amélie Mierger and Jewel Tasi are a little way behind the top three.  Amélie has been on the podium for the past two years but she has got work to do to make it this year.  We haven’t seen Jewel on the international platform before so we are excited to see what she can bring.

It’s worth mentioning Natalie Laalaai at this point.  She is nominated in 7th place with 592.5kg but she has since totalled an impressive 632.5kg, pulling a comfortable looking 270kg deadlift along the way for the biggest raw female deadlift in the IPF, taking this crown from Amanda Lawrence who pulled 268.5kg at Sheffield.

This might be the deepest field we have seen in the 84+kg class - don’t miss a minute of it!  Broadcast live on Eurosport 2 and Eurosport Asia as well the Olympics YouTube channel.
