The Brits are in the ascendant in the 120kg class. 2019 world champion Tony Cliffe is coming for the title and he is bringing British Powerlifting's biggest deadlifter as back up. Can Mohamed Sahad defend his title or will we see a new heavyweight champion of the world? Let's take a look at the nominations.
Tony Cliffe GBR 955.5kg
Inderraj Singh Dhillon GBR 915.5kg
Mohamed Sahad ALG 910kg
Nicolas Peyraud FRA 895kg
Carl Petter Sommerseth NOR 890kg
Tony Cliffe has been lifting mainly equipped for the past couple of years but he is back out of kit and bringing his usual solid, no nonsense lifting style to the classic platform once more. After more than 20 years in the game, Cliffe's 955.5kg total here was a lifetime PB and probably not completely maxed out. He is 40kg ahead of his nearest rival so surely this is his to lose and classic is so much less risky than equipped.
The next name on the roster is fellow Brit, Indy Singh. He has an absolute weapon of a deadlift. At the recent British nationals, he pulled 385.5kg to move to the very top of the BP deadlift rankings. This matches exactly Bryce Krawczyk's world record deadlift and with Krawczyk not present to defend, we could see a deadlift world record heading back to Blighty.
Last year's world champion, Mohamed Sahad is nominated back in 3rd place. He won with 920kg last year so we are not counting him out of this, especially with that massive squat. He's up against some deadlifters here though so he will need to squeeze everything he can out of the sub-total.
Further back, we have a tight cluster of nominations. Nicolas Peyraud is the current junior world champion - he has the junior total world record already and he has a lot of growing yet to do to fill out the class. Carl Sommerseth was the bronze medallist last year, pulling 360kg for the place. Mateusz Grzersik of Poland is nominated with the same 890kg total so expect some serious scrapping for places.
