The Classic World Championships is almost upon us and we have potentially our best team ever heading out to Malta.
Sophia Ellis has been making waves in the 76kg for some time now. Current European Champion, she holds the European deadlift record at 240.5kg. She had a disappointing day in Sun City last year (still got a bronze medal in bench though!) but her training has been looking incredible lately. She's nominated in 5th place but with a raft of world champions and world record holders ahead, she will have to fight like crazy to move herself up the rankings. Expect some monster deadlifts in this session with four or five athletes pulling more than 240kg. Sophia will lift in the Friday night Prime Time session which will be streamed live on Eurosport.
Two Brits lift in the 105s in the Saturday night Prime Time. Abdul Majeed Sulayman snagged the overall bronze last year, with a bench bronze and deadlift silver to go with it. He took top prize at the UK Arnold not long afterwards and looked to have a lot of momentum. He hit a bump at the Euros in December though, going 6 for 9 and finishing off the podium.
He got a late call up to Sheffield in March and put up his biggest ever total - the 900kg he is nominated by here. He left a lot of kilos behind at that one though, missing all his third attempts so he's definitely got more and will be in the fight for podium places.
Ben Pape is also in the 105s and in a Prime Time position. Current British champion, this is his second classic worlds. He finished in sixth place last year and has added 12.5kg to his total since then. Honestly though, the standard this year is unbelievable and Ben will have a mountain to climb to improve his position.
Good luck guys! We will be watching.
