It's hard to deny that the 84kg class has been all about Amanda Lawrence for some time now. Will she be challenged at the upcoming Classic World Championships in Malta? Let's take a look at the nominations:
Amanda Lawrence USA 645kg
Kristín Þórhallsdóttir ISL 580kg
Ziana Azariah GBR 555.5kg
Temitope Nuga GBR 542.5kg
Hema Govind NZL 525kg
Amanda Lawrence burst into our lives at the 2019 world championships in Helsingborg, Sweden. She battled Dani Melo that day and their session was one of the highlights of the whole competition. Lawrence broke the squat world record, Melo broke the bench world record and then every single deadlift was a world record attempt. They were neck and neck on openers and, in the end, they were neck and neck on total with only 500g of bodyweight to separate them.
From there on out, Lawrence dominated. This will be her 4th world championship with 3 wins under her belt already. She is the world record holder in squat, deadlift and total. At Sheffield in March, she took back the mantle of biggest raw deadlifter in the IPF with a massive 268.5kg. It's since been exceeded at a local competition in New Zealand by Natalie Laalaai with 270kg - can Lawrence reclaim it?
Nominated in second place but a fair chunk ahead of the rest of the pack is Þórhallsdóttir from Iceland. She took the silver medal fairly comfortably last year and that's where she did the 580kg total we see in her nomination. She's done more since though and 600kg is looking possible if she's on form.
We have two Brits nominated in third and fourth, both big deadlifters. They had a great battle at British nationals in March. There was only half a kilo in it at sub-total and they deadlifted for the title, giving the packed and noisy crowd an exciting finish. Temi Nuga pulled 232.5kg that day but couldn't quite match Ziana Azariah who deadlifted 245kg for the win.
Hema Govind is something of an unknown quantity. We last saw her as a junior in Helsingborg but she's added nearly 100kg to her total since then and is still improving.
