IPF Classic World Championships - 59kg class

The 59s kicked off the 2023 Classic World Championships and it was a close battle from the outset.

Franklin León of Ecuador, having finally secured the equipped world title in Viborg, Denmark last November, has returned to the classic arena for the first time since 2019.  He picked up the squat gold with 222.5kg and, as he has recently turned 40, he picked up the M1 world record too.

The hot favourite in class, Wascar Carpio of Team USA, matched him on squat at a slightly heavier bodyweight for the silver and 2021 world champion, Antione Garcia of France, picked up the squat bronze with 217.5kg.

Carpio led the field on bench, taking the gold with 142.5kg.  León won the silver medal with 135kg but missed the 140kg that would have kept him in closer touch with Carpio.  After a shaky start on squat, GB's Ishtyaq Nabi picked up the bench bronze and a 5kg PB with 135kg.

Going into deadlifts, Carpio was 7.5kg ahead of León.  However, his 245kg opener put him on 610kg and the landscape changed drastically.  León was suddenly under attack on two fronts as both Garcia and Ivan Campano Diaz of Spain moved 2.5kg ahead and it started to look like the battle was for second place with Carpio streaking out ahead.  Neverthless, León's opening deadlift gave him the M1 total world record with 572.5kg.

Campano broke the junior total world record with his second deadlift of 250kg, which moved him up into second place, only 2.5kg ahead of Garcia and León.  As they were both exactly the same bodyweight - 58.80kg - this raised an unusual situation.  Usually when two lifters have the same total, the lighter on bodyweight will win.  However, if they have the same bodyweight, then it's the first person to make the total that wins.

The first of the four to come out for their final deadlift was León.  He made short work of 240kg to regain second place and also to take the M1 deadlift record.  However, the place was not secure - Garcia was next out to attempt 255kg.  However, it stalled out around his knees and the weight swung out in front of him.  He fell to his knees, disappointment crystallising off him.

Campano was next for 262.5kg to try to steal silver and push León down to third.  He executed perfectly and threw back his head to laugh at the top of the lift.  An extension to his junior total world record,  deadlift gold and silver overall - an impressive haul.

The last man to pull was Carpio.  With the title secured, he asked for 272.5kg to attempt the automatic qualifying total for the Sheffield Powerlifting Championships in 2024.  His 260kg second had been super quick but the bar sprang from his hands close to lockout.  Nevertheless, a gold medal in your first world championships is an impressive result.
