Wow. There is a lot to unpack in the 74kg class - the depth of competition is just incredible. Here are the nominations as they currently stand.
Yakov Ionin KAZ 733kg
Taylor Atwood USA 732.5kg
Leonardo Sucitra AUS 728kg
Paul Rembauville FRA 727.5kg
Alexander Eriksson SWE 727.5kg
OK, let’s start by saying we know Taylor Atwood has done A LOT more than his nomination here suggests. He won 2019 Classic Worlds with 790.5kg, which is still the world record total in the 74s, and put up an incredible 838.5kg on home turf last year. So although he gave quite a sedate performance at American nationals for his 732.5kg nomination, we are expecting crazy numbers from Taylor and he is the one to beat.
Current world champion, Alexander Eriksson is nominated in 5th place but only 5kg covers the top five nominations so there is almost nothing in it. His training is coming back fast after surgery last month, but will he be back up to full strength in time?
Paul Rembauville and Yakov Ionin were silver and bronze medallists respectively last year. Both have improved their numbers at their national championships and we also have the return of Leonardo Sucitra, who we last saw in Helsingborg. He’s been busy adding nearly 70kg to his total since then and is well and truly in the mix in this competition.
With big names like Joshua Wright and Clinton Lee not even making the top 5 nominations, you will want to watch live to see history made on the Olympic channel or our Facebook page on 7th June.
