The first session on day 2 of the Sub-junior, Junior and Masters World Championships was the 53kg and 59kg classes, juniors and sub-juniors
Both the 53kg classes were lessons in how a big deadlifter can
overturn a sub-total advantage - Oleksii Halahan of Ukraine lost out to a huge
200kg deadlift from Jakub Bonkowski of Poland in the sub-juniors, despite a
17.5kg lead after bench-press. Similarly in the junior class, Kirill Shumskikh
of Russia only secured the title by 2.5kg with his final pull despite
dominating in squat and bench.
The 59kg sub-junior class saw a close run battle on bench
between teammates from Kazakhstan but, in the end, Boris Bukatka took the World
Championship title with a 50kg lead.
Russian lifter, Dmitrii Evdokimov could not be caught in the
59kg juniors, despite Mutada Al-Helli of Iraq out-deadlifting him by over 30kg
for the deadlift gold.
Overall, impressive lifting and great viewing! If you missed it,
