IPF World Classic 2021 - 84+kg class

Super Sunday kicked off with the 84+kg women and some surprises on squats. Sweden’s Anna-Lena Bellqvist, nominated in 6th place, streaked ahead and took the squat gold with a European record of 245kg ahead of ROC’S Olga Kuzmina who broke the junior European record with 235kg. Hot favourite Amelie Mierger of France was close behind with 232.5kg for the bronze going into bench, her best lift.

Mierger pulled ahead with a European bench record of 145kg. Sweden’s Emelie Leach pressed 135kg for the silver with Kuzmina taking the bronze. At sub-total a 20kg spread covered the top 5 lifters with some strong deadlifters in the field.
The opening round of deadlifts really shook up the pack. Canada’s Brittany Schlater pulled herself into the podium places with a huge 232.5kg opener. Leach pulled a convincing 230kg for the silver medal place with Mierger stayed just ahead and taking the European total record in the process.
However, Mierger failed her second on lockout, which opened the door for Leach and Schlater. Leach took the lead with her second pull of 240kg but Schlater jumped past with a comfortable looking 245kg. Both lifters looked to have a bit of more to give on this lift too.
Amelie was first to pull in the third round but again struggled with lockout leaving her unable to improve on bronze. Bellqvist made a brave attempt at 240kg to make the podium but couldn’t get it all the way to lockout.
Two pulls left. Emelie Leach deadlifted a European record of 245kg to take the lead. But Brittany Schlater was unstoppable and pulled 250kg for the Superheavyweight World Title, demonstrating perfectly the power of the deadlifter to come from behind and snatch the win.
