Super Sunday continued with the 120+kg class, our final session of the whole eleven day competition. It was a long slog but worth it to make it to this point – the much anticipated international debut of USVI’s Jesus Olivares.
Jesus really made his mark on squats, ending with a junior world record at 427.5kg. Ruben Rico Martin from Spain came out roaring and impressed with a 380kg squat for silver with Ukraine’s Dmytro Vovk just behind with 362.5kg.
Vovk was superb on bench, finishing with an easy looking 260kg which pulled him up into second place. Canada’s Erik Willis pressed 257.5kg for the bench silver, having moved up from the 120kg class this year. Olivares took the junior world record with 252.5kg but this was not quite enough to make the bench podium as France’s Romauld Masse benched 255kg from the B group for the bronze.
At sub-total, Olivares looked hard to beat, nearly 60kg in the lead and he took the junior world record total with his opening pull, extending it to 1045kg with his second. Willis opened his deadlift with a monster pull of 350kg, rocketing him into contention and, as we moved into the second round, Willis, Vovk and Martin were all within 2.5kg of each other.
Ruben and Dmytro both pulled 330kg for their second but Willis stormed into third place with 370kg, pushing the Spaniard down into 4th. Vovk lost his grip at the top with 340kg and came under pressure from Ruben Rico Martin but the Spaniard couldn’t quite lock out 345kg and could not improve his position. Erik Willis absolutely smoked 375kg to move himself up to the silver medal, making his mark in his new weight class. Special mention to GB’s Wes Hall who took the deadlift silver from the B group with a brilliant 370kg pull.
A dramatic roaring end to a phenomenal competition.
