The middle session of Day 4 of the Open categories was the 84kg class. Although USVI’s Amanda Lawrence was well ahead in the nominations, there were some interesting battles brewing further down the field.
Amanda looked superb from the outset with an opening squat of 232.5kg, a weight that no other 84kg classic lifter has ever achieved in the IPF. She followed this up with a world record of 243.5kg but couldn’t quite get to the top with 250kg.
Angelina Elovikova of ROC came into the competition as the squat and total world record holder in the now defunct 72kg class. Having moved up all the way to the 84s over lockdown, there was some real anticipation over what she could achieve at a higher bodyweight. As powerful as she looked, she couldn’t quite shake off Iceland’s Krstin Thorshallsdottir who matched her on the squat at 217.5kg.
As we moved into bench, Amanda continued to be in a class of her own, extending her lead to 43.5kg and looking unassailable with a 132.5kg press. Krstin and Angelina continued to be closely matched until Krstin missed her third bench and slipped 2.5kg behind. Canadian Danielle Philibert improved her standings with a 120kg bench for the silver but trailed the podium places by 10kg at sub-total.
Belgium’s Sonita Muluh opened her deadlift with 230kg for a European record – a weight that would ultimately net her the deadlift silver. However, the Amanda Lawrence show really got into full swing with an easy opener of 240kg that extended her own total world record by 3kg. Her second pull at 258kg took the deadlift world record too and she finished up with 260.5 – the biggest raw deadlift ever recorded by a woman in the IPF. She also scooped the best lifter prize with 120.6168 GL points, an incredible achievement.
In the race for second place, Elovikova pressed her advantage with a 225kg opener over Thoshalldottir’s 210kg. However her grip failed on subsequent attempts at 232.5kg and the Icelandic lifter closed the gap with a second of 222.5kg and then pulled for second place with a valiant effort at 230kg that was turned down for supporting. So close!
