In the 83kg class, Russel Orhii’s world record squats of 313.5kg and then 320.5kg gave him an early lead and he matched his world record total of 833kg with his second pull making him virtually impossible to catch. However, the lifters brought plenty of excitement despite this with one of the best deadlift sessions we have ever seen.
France’s Yanis Bouchou kicked us off with a really easy 330kg pull, only 1kg below his own world record. Christian Ayandokun of Great Britain joined the party with a world record attempt of 331.5kg which slipped out of his grip before he could lock it out. Asein Enahoro of Hungary went next with 332.5kg and took the record with the last pull of round two. With Orhii so far out in front, the final round was all about deadlift medals and world records. Of course, Russel wanted a piece of the action and pulled a comfortable looking 333kg to take the record from Asein and also extend his own world record total to 841kg.
Amazingly, this was not the end of the session. Nikolay Zemtsov of Kazhakstan attempted a world record deadlift of 335kg to try to snatch the overall silver but just couldn’t get it moving. Christian Ayandokun came out for 335.5kg. He managed to keep hold of it this time but couldn’t get it past his knees. Yanis came out for the same weight and smoked it to take back the record he set at the European University Cup in August. However, one pull remained. Asein Enahoro asked for 336kg to be loaded to the bar. For a moment, it looked like he had locked out his knees too early but he recovered in an instant and took back the world record he had held for only a moment in the previous round.
This one was a real crowd pleaser and a great end to the day.
