Day 1 of the 2021 World Open, Sub Junior, Junior & Masters Classic & Equipped Bench Press Championships was given over to the equipped masters.

The British M1 women’s team dominated with two world champions, two silver medallists and one bronze. ROC’s Svetlana Trofimova won best lifter however with 73.39 GL points. In the M2s, ROC was just ahead of the British in the team competition but GB’s Jo Whiteley edged out ROC’s Valentina Nelyubova for best lifter with 71.84 GL points. In the M4s, Chiyomi Sawa of Japan claimed the 76kg world record with 100kg to add to her M4 84kg world record of 115kg.

Sweden took the M1 men’s award ahead of Poland, whose Adam Balawejder won best lifter with 91.93 GL points. Team Germany won the M2 men’s team award with 3 silver medallists, just ahead of home nation, Lithuania but Jan Wegiera of Poland was best lifter with 90.34 GL points. In the M3s, both Sweden and Finland had two world champions so the team contest was decided on total GL points. As Sweden’s Tomas Ring took best lifter, this swung the competition for Sweden. Finland took the M4 competition however with one world champion and two silver medallists: Antanas Micius of Lithuania was best lifter.
The length of time away from competition showed in some performances but some masters just keep getting better like fine wine.
