We opened the final day of the World Bench Press Championships with the 84kg and 84+kg classes and boy did they deliver!
Liudmila Protchenko, already equipped world champion, dominated the 84s from the start. She opened at 140kg which put her out of reach of the other competitors and gave her the opportunity to attempt to extend her own world record to 148kg on her second. She absolutely smoked it and put on an incredible 155kg for her third, giving her the biggest female raw bench ever done in an IPF competition. No surprise then that she walked away with the best lifter prize. Her nearest competitor in the equipped competition, Zhadyra Bermukhambetova (KAZ) also took silver in the classic with Kinga Moczydlowska (POL) having to really fight for the bronze.
We had a similar situation in the 84+kg class with Agnes Szabo of Hungary leading the field from the start with an opener of 140kg. She looked strong with 145kg for her second but narrowly missed a world record attempt at 152kg. Xeniya Okatgenko of Kazakhstan took silver with an impressive 130kg with M2 lifter Inna Orobets (UKR) taking third place.
Kazakhstan and Ukraine finished on 46 points each so the team contest went down to total points and Kazakhstan snatched the win with an extra 14.79 GL points. A brilliant finish to a fantastic competition.
