The middleweight men lifted on Day 9 of the World Bench Press Championships in Vilnius, Lithuania.
A really tight race in the 83kg class was resolved when Volodymyr Tsaturian of Ukraine missed his third attempt at 215kg, leaving France’s Mehdi Sahari with the gold and the freedom to attempt the world record with 219kg. It was initially turned down but the jury intervened and awarded the lift and the record.
More than half of the 93kg class opened in the 205kg – 210kg range but Vyacheslav Tsoy (KAZ) put in a last minute change to open with 220kg, giving him an early lead. He missed 222.5kg on his second however and then came under pressure when Ukraine’s Bohdan Bon matched him with his second. Bon was heavier however and needed to do more to win. Jakub Sedlacek (CZE) made a spirited attempt to move into the lead with 220kg but it was not to be, leaving him with the bronze. Bon took 222.5kg for his third, moving into the lead and had a stressful few moments waiting to see if Tsoy would take it back but Tsoy’s third moved no further than his second, leaving Bohdan Bon the 93kg world champion.
We had a few surprises in the 105s, with Josef Eriksson of Sweden playing a quiet game and coming from behind to take the win by dint of being the only man to make his third attempt. ROC’s Denis Malchikov was only 2.5kg behind for the silver and Anatolli Novopismennyi another 2.5kg behind for an unaccustomed third place.
At the end of Day 9, Chuprynko was still holding top spot in the best lifter competition, helping the Ukraine team in their charge for the team award with two world champions so far.
