IPF World Equipped - Heavyweight Women

First published on IPF social media on 1st Nov 2023

The 69kg class lifts on Thursday 16th November at the World Equipped Championships in Lithuania.  Here are the top three nominations:

1  Kelsey McCarthy (USA) - 638kg
2  Matilda Vilmar (SWE) - 600kg
3  Cathrin Silberzahn (GER) - 587.5kg

McCarthy is the current world champion in this class, having taken her third world title in Viborg, Denmark last year.  She brought the silver medal home from The World Games in Birmingham Alabama last year behind a dominant Agata Sitko.  She holds the total world record in this class at 637.5kg and she is definitely the one to beat.

Vilmar was the silver medallist last year, hitting huge PRs on squat and deadlift for the 600kg total she is nominated with here.   We haven't seen her compete equipped since Viborg but if she continues on her current trajectory, she will be bringing the challenge to McCarthy.

Silberzahn has struggled on bench at her last two competitions but she is due some good luck so here's hoping this one goes better.  Her nominated total here is from The World Games in 2022 but she has hit more in the past and isn't far behind Vilmar.  With a couple of upcoming Norwegians right behind her however, she is facing a serious challenge for the podium.

The 76kg class lift first on Day 5 - Friday 17th Nov and we have a highly anticipated rematch.

1  Sonja Stefanie Krüger (GER) - 658kg
2  Marte Elverum (NOR) - 652kg
3  Natalie Hanson (USA) - 585kg

Krüger has been a dominant force in equipped powerlifting for years.  Incredibly only just out of the juniors, her career encompasses a huge number of wins, as a sub-junior, a junior and even in the open classes.  She holds the open class squat world record in two weight classes and the bench record in the 69s too.  After narrowly missing the open world title in 2021, she finally secured it in 2022.

Elverum has the advantage of a huge deadlift - which shifts the balance of power at the endgame.  Her 652kg nomination is from her national championships and was a PR total so she is carrying some momentum coming into this.

And then we have the returning two-time world champion, Hanson.  We last saw her in Dubai at the 2019 World Equipped where she took the silver medal in the 84kg class.  She's dropped a weight class now and her total took a hit while she was adjusting to the new class so she is coming in as something of a dark horse.

It promises to be an exciting session so don't miss a second.  Streamed live on YouTube and Facebook.
