British Team at Classic Worlds - Annie Nelson

Annie Nelson moved up to the 69s for Euros late last year and hasn't yet had time to properly grow into the class.   At the British in March, Annie had a ding dong battle with fellow Scot, Tasmin Campbell.  She took the British squat record that day with 186kg but Tasmin took the rest and won by half a kilo.  They both secured their nomination to worlds though and prepared for another close fight.

Annie opened heavy on squat with 175kg and it moved well but was turned down for lack of depth.  She took it again for her second.  Just as quick, she got three white lights for it this time around and took a big jump all the way up to 190kg for her third.  It was smooth and sub-max and we wondered where she would have ended up if she hadn't missed her opener.  Still, it was a new British record for Annie and a harbinger of a huge squat to come.

After squat, Annie was in sixth place in a fierce field of 23 elite lifters but she slid a little during the course of the bench rounds.  She hit 105kg but 107.5kg on her final attempt just wouldn't go all the way.

This left Annie in 8th place at sub-total and she opened her deadlift with a conservative 195kg.  She took another big jump to her second lift and 207.5kg certainly slowed her down a little, but was never in any doubt.

In the final round, the field was tightly packed with only 10kg covering 5th - 9th place.  Annie attempted a PB of 215kg to bridge the gap and she got it all the way to lockout before her grip went.  Bad luck.

502.5kg total and 8th place wasn't the day Annie was looking for but that squat continues to grow and, as Annie fills out the weight class fully, we will see a lot more from her, I'm sure.
