IPF Classic World Championships - 84kg class

Originally published on IPF social media on 18th June 2023

The 84kg class has belonged to USA's Amanda Lawrence for years now.  We well remember the neck and neck battle she had with Dani Melo in Helsingborg in 2019 which gave Lawrence her first open world title and was one of the highlights of that year's world championships.

Since then she hasn't really been challenged and so has been playing the elite game of aiming for the Best Lifter award.  Last year she was pipped to the post by Tiffany Chapon and was in the hunt to reclaim that crown.

Lawrence looked strong on squat and attempted to extend her own world record on her third squat.  249kg went on the bar.  It went to depth and only slowed a little through the sticking point and Lawrence took her first world record of the day.

Despite missing two squats on depth, Iceland's Kristín Þórhallsdóttir tracked in a pretty solid second place, after bench.  However, further down the field, there were running battles and ever changing places.

Once the first round of deadlifts were registered, Lawrence was over 60kg ahead and already in 5th place in the Best Lifter race. Þórhallsdóttir looked secure in second but there was a battle going on between British teammates, Ziana Azariah and Temi Nuga with Azariah 2.5kg ahead.

Nuga moved into third with a 240kg deadlift that was right on the limit.  However, Azariah was next out for 247.5kg to take it back.  She pulled it easily and snatched the deadlift silver and the overall bronze.

The last lift of the day belonged to Lawrence.  She got 267.5kg most of the way but it wouldn't lock out and Amanda Lawrence had to settle for the deadlift and overall gold.

Amanda Lawrence   USA   636.5kg

Kristín Þórhallsdóttir   ISL   565kg

Ziana Azariah   GBR   557.5kg
