European Classic Masters 2023 - Day 6 Preview

Sunday 5th March is the final day of the European Classic Masters and features the Masters 1 heavier weight classes.

The first session begins at 8am GMT and our only lifter in this group is Gen Collins in the 76kg class.  Gen won the 69kg class last year so it's going to be interesting what she can do in this class.  She is up against the world champion though and it looks to be a packed class right through the mid-field.

Session two kicks off at 11.30am GMT and this should be an interesting one.  Helen Ferguson-Ford is the incoming European champion coming back from a short hiatus.  However, she has team-mate Rebecca Coggles just ahead in nominations.  Rebecca has just popped up into the masters category and looks set to smash the M1 world record on squat as well as blasting her way through the British records.  Rebecca has the upper hand on squat and bench but Helen holds the deadlift cards so this session should be one to watch!

Finally, at 2.30pm GMT, we have the big lads.  Simon Scott is nominated in fourth in the 120kg class.  He took the bronze medal at the Euros last year and matched it at World Masters in Canada too!   He will have work to do to match this result this year as the standard keeps on rising but he's within reach so I'm sure he will give it his all.

Our final lifter is Paul Walker in the M1 super heavyweights.  He's nominated in second place behind the undefeated world champion and it doesn't look like he is too heavily challenged from behind so, with a bit of luck, Paul will be bringing home his first overall medal.

Best of luck to the whole team!
