Day 5 of the European Classic Masters sees a return to the
fray for the women. The first session
begins at 8am GMT and we kick off with two Brits in the M1 47kg class.
Rebecca Heath has a world title and a couple of European
titles to her name. However, despite
being the incoming champ, she is nominated in third place. She gave away some kilos on her nominated
total by trying for British records on squat and bench so we are confident that
she will be in the fight for gold.
Right at the top of the 47kg table, we have Lenka Pilnikova. Silver medallist at the recent Commonwealth
Championships in New Zealand and current OPEN British Champion, Lenka has just
moved up to the masters this year and looks set to make waves in this class.
The second session is the A groups for the 57kg and 63kg classes
and will begin at 11.30am GMT.
Cat Shamel and Helen Hughes will be duking it out for podium
places in the 57s. Both international
veterans, Cat has just moved up from the 52kg class. They both have two European titles to their
name but how is Cat going to fare having gone up? Helen has the advantage on bench but Cat has
the squat so this might well go all the way.
In the 63s, another fairly new master, Hannah Yardy is
nominated in second place. Hannah
brought a chest full of medals back from the World Masters in St Johns last
year, including the overall silver and she is up against the same opponent this
time out. We’re confident she will be on the podium but
the colour of her medal is still uncertain.
The third session will begin at 2.30pm and will be the 93kg
class.
We have two lifters in this class, both nominated in mid-field. Michele Tegon is a relative newcomer, having
made a good account of himself at his first international in Canada last
year. Tom Celestin is a familiar face
though, usually bedecked in Bethnal Green 😊. He has been around the block a few times and
we are looking forwarding to seeing whether he can bring home the deadlift
gold.
