The 93kg class is headed up by the USA re-match everyone wanted. Reigning world champion, Jonathan Cayco went head to head with Chance Mitchell at American nationals in April and gave us quite the show. But this is a stacked class and they won’t be able to focus just on each other. Here are the nominations:
Jonathan Cayco USA 888kg
Chance Mitchell USA 875.5kg
Gustav Hedlund Sweden 865kg
Sascha Stendebach Germany 863kg
Gavin Adin USVI 855kg
The two Americans pushed each other hard at American nationals with Cayco exceeding his own bench world record with 240.5kg and Mitchell pulling a phenomenal 383kg deadlift – again well in excess of the world record. Cayco came out on top that time but Mitchell is improving so quickly that he’s going to find it difficult to keep ahead.
Gustav Hedlund is nipping at their heels – a great all-round powerlifter, Gustav took the silver medal in Halmstad. If he can just nail that third deadlift, there’s no telling what he can do.
Sascha Stendebach holds the deadlift world record at 373kg and has been putting together some impressive totals since making the switch from equipped. Will he sacrifice playing safe for position for the opportunity to defend his deadlift world record from Mitchell? Maybe that’s best left in the hands of the coaches.
Although Gavin Adin is nominated in 5th with 855kg, he has totalled 880kg in the past which puts him in contention right at the front and he has a shot at the squat world record – I think there’s every chance we could see all four world records in the class fall, maybe more than once.
With last year’s bronze medalist Emil Krastev of Bulgaria not even making it into the top 5 nominations, we’re in for some world class lifting and a phenomenal deadlift battle. You can only hope, anyway.
