While nothing is certain in sport, we strongly expect the 63kg class to be all about Prescillia Bavoil. Last year in Halmstad she opened her squat with a world record of 195kg and then pushed it up to 205kg on her second. She followed this up with deadlift world records of 225kg and then 230.5kg which also netted her the world record total at 548kg. I think it’s fair to say that she will be hard to catch.
However, the battle for the rest of the podium places is fierce – here are the top 5 nominations:
Prescillia Bavoil FRA 548kg
Chiara Bernardi ITA 500.5kg
Sara Naldi ITA 497.5kg
Meghan Scanlon USA 495kg
Iris Scholten NED 495kg
The two Italians are both in their first year out of the juniors. Chiara Bernardi is the incoming junior world champion and holds the juniors world records in deadlift and total at 210kg and 505.5kg respectively. Sara Naldi took the silver behind her teammate in the juniors in Halmstad – she broke the junior world record in squat at that competition and pushed it up to 183.5kg at the Europeans. These two are already ranked second and third in the Italian federation, behind only Carola Garra and it feels like we are witnessing the birth of a rivalry that will give us some great battles for years.
Meghan Scanlon was the silver medallist in the 57s in Helsingborg in 2019, her only international competition to date. She missed out on the top spot that day by only 1.5kg and we are excited to see what she will bring to the 63s.
Iris Scholten took the silver medal last year behind Bavoil, holding off Ivana Horna by only 2.5kg – Ivana has moved up to the 69s for this competition but that won’t be any consolation with so many top class lifters in the pack and Iris will need to push hard to match that position this time.
With fast improving Brit, Annie Nelson, and Austria’s Pantea Supanetz right behind, this promises to be one of the most closely fought weight classes of the competition. Behind Lya, anyway.

Don’t miss out, tune in to the Olympic channel or our facebook page at 2pm local time on Wednesday 8th June.
