The M3 and M4 men kicked us off with an early morning session and set the standard for the competition. In the M3 66kg class, Michael Wimmer of Germany had an outstanding day, going 9 for 9. It was a close run battle at sub-total but his deadlift of 180kg pulled out an insurmountable lead over the Polish lifter, Marian Piwowarczyk.
The M3 74kg brought the most tension with 3 way battles for
supremacy in bench and deadlift. Allen Ottolangui tried for a world record
squat of 233.5kg but didn’t quite make it. He did however manage to hold off
the competition well enough to take gold in every lift and walk away with his
first world title.
Bakyt Kerimbekov from Kyrgyzstan struggled a little: he was late
out to the platform and timed out for his first squat, made it on his second
attempt but unfortunately had a world record attempt of 291kg turned down due
to depth. Similar issues plagued him on bench but he got his M3 world record
bench on his third attempt with much relief! Undeterred, he made a heroic
attempt at a 252.5kg deadlift for the total World Record and it was so very
close but not quite there today.
Jozef Gromek from Poland set the pace from the start in the M3
93kg class and looked superb in squat. Kim Salby of Denmark set a new M3 World
Record on bench with a huge 188.5kg press – the first successful world record
of the championships - but Jozef Gromek put up the biggest deadlift of the day
at 250kg and sealed his World Championship title ahead of Michael Sekot from
Czechia.
Experience showed today with every lifter making a total in this
session – no mean feat in equipped lifting!
