IPF World Bench 2021 - classic masters

Days 4 to 6 were given over to the classic masters competition. What made this part of the championships more interesting were the re-matches from the equipped competition. Fellow Brits, Sarah Bouskill and Jaxx Gough in the M1 supers went head to head for the second time with Jaxx coming out on top this time. The M3 105s saw a similar reversal with Finland’s Seppo Komppa narrowly beating Allan Fuglsang of Denmark for the classic title. Quite a few lifters did the double, taking both equipped and classic titles, including Oleksandr Chernyshov, Takuya Yamashita, Harri Tirronen, Oleg Borisov, Erika Salamon, Bev Rodgers, Tina Voho and Jo Whiteley

There was some really close competition too. The gold medal went on bodyweight in the M1 74s and only 2.5kg separated all three men on the podium in the M2 74s. In the M1 105kg class, USVI’s Philip Wilkins only just missed a world record attempt at 235.5kg. In the M1 120s, Jerijus Strazdauskas of Lithuania was more successful with his world record attempt of 240.5kg. These two took 1st and 2nd place best lifter awards and helped Lithuania to their first team win of the competition so far.
Janos Cserna was superb in the M2s, taking the best lifter award as a superheavyweight – no mean feat - but German won the team competition with two world champions.
In the M1 57s, Erika Salamon made a spirited attempt at 103kg for a new world record but just missed which opened the door to Brazil’s Iolanda Costa for the best lifter award with Finland on top for the team contest. In the women’s M2s, Annette Pedersen impressed as always and surprised no-one by winning best lifter. GB took the team award with two world champions.
Special mention goes to Anita Thimm of Germany who absolutely annihilated the world record in the M4 63kg class with 65kg and made it look extremely easy. More to come from her for sure.
We love to see the rolling battles in the masters that continue from competition to competition and year to year. Long may it continue.
