IPF Equipped Worlds - Day 6

The final day of competition was the 84kg, 84+kg and 120+kg classes.

In the 84kg class, Daria Rusanenko, still a junior, extended her own world record in squat with an impressive 278kg.  3 time world champion Rhaea Stinn jumped into prominence on bench, as she always does.  She missed her opener though and ended up with “only” 202.5kg.  It was easily enough for the gold medal and to get her into the lead.

Rusanenko made a valiant effort to close the gap but, in the end, Stinn could not be caught and she claimed her 4th back to back world title.

1  Rhaea Stinn CAN - 650kg
2  Daria Rusanenko UKR - 640.5kg
3  Ankie Timmers NED - 625kg

Great squatting in the 84+kg class, including an M2 world record for Heidi Hille Arnesen NOR.  Sóley Margrét Jónsdóttir hit 277.5kg for the squat gold medal but hit problems on bench, only getting her 2nd.  This gave the opportunity to GBR’s Kate Sweatman who was on top form.

Her 270kg squat plus a massive 220kg bench put Sweatman in the lead by over 30kg at sub-total.  She gave herself a fright by stumbling on her first deadlift, losing her balance. She hit it on her second though and Jónsdóttir could not close the gap. After many, many years we crowned a British women’s equipped world champion.

1  Kate Sweatman GBR - 670kg
2  Sóley Margrét Jónsdóttir ISL - 657.5kg
3  Valentyna Zahoruiko UKR - 637.5kg

Our final session was the superheavyweights - the 120+kg class.  2022 world champion, Ukraine’s Andrii Shevchenko didn’t seem on top form, only getting his opener in on squat.  Still, that opener was 430kg and was enough for the gold medal.  Joe Cappellino was right behind on 427.5kg and was well placed to capitalise when Shevchenko failed to get a bench on the board and crashed out of the competition.

Cappellino played a smart game on deadlifts, doing just what he needed to maintain a healthy lead.  It paid off for him and, after many years of narrowly missing, he finally stood on the top step of the podium to hear his national anthem played at Equipped Worlds.

1  Joseph Cappellino USA - 1087.5kg
2  Christoph Seefeld GER - 1067.5kg
3  Carlos Campos Murillo CRC - 1067.5kg
