The 2023 Classic World Championships in Malta was the biggest and best show yet put on by the IPF and the British team were probably the strongest team we've ever sent. However, things did not always go to plan.
Ishtyaq Nabi lifted in the 59kg class on the first day of competition and he struggled initially, not standing up with his second squat at 190kg and then cutting depth on his third. Ultimately, this cost him but with an all star cast of lightweights up ahead, he had a fight on his hands anyway.
He bounced back well nonetheless and took a British record and a bronze medal in bench with 135kg. His 565kg total would have matched first place last year but in 2023, it was only enough for fifth place.
Neverthless, Ishtyaq now has the biggest 59kg total in British Powerlifting history, even beating the legendary Precious McKenzie, and only need a few more kilos on his squat to make a clean sweep of the British records.
