IPF Classic World Championships - 52kg class

First published on IPF social media on 14th June 2023

The 52kg closed out the first day of competition at Classic Worlds in Malta and we were treated to a fantastic display of lifting.

We well remember the squat battle between Noémie Allabert of France and Pleun Dekkers of the Netherlands at last year's world championships where the squat record was broken 5 times.  Squats weren't quite at that level this time but Dekkers still took the squat gold with 167.5kg.  New Zealand gave us a one two punch with Megan-Li Smith showing well on 167.5kg for the silver and Evie Corrigan just behind on 162.5kg.  Incoming world champion and squat world record holder, Noémie Allabert of France, had an uncharacteristically off day, only getting her second at 162.5kg and finishing off the squat podium.

Corrigan shot into the lead with a 100kg press that also netted her the bench gold.  Serbia's Aleksandra Aranitovic moved up into contention and won the bench silver with 97.5kg.  Special mention of Monica de la Torre of Mexico who benched 95kg and took the bronze from the B group.

At sub-total, Corrigan led by 5kg with Smith and Dekkers matched on 257.5kg and Allabert and Aranitovic matched on 250kg.  Barely anything in it.  Things changed after opening deadlifts, as they often do.  Allabert moved up to second with a huge 187.5kg opener but Corrigan was in the ascendant - she opened with 190kg, pulling out an insurmountable lead and the field started to separate out.

Allabert cemented second place with a lifetime PB of 200kg and Smith pulled 180kg for the bronze.  Further down the field, Singapore's Farhanna Farid had a score to settle.  Corrigan had broken her deadlift world record at the Sheffield Championships and Farid wanted it back.  Support from the crowd was huge and 203kg leapt to lockout like a startled bird.  Phemonenal lifting.

Evie Corrigan   NZL   460kg

Noémie Allabert   FRA   450kg

Megan-Li Smith   NZL   437.5kg
