IPF Classic World Championships - 83kg class preview

First published on IPF social media on 15th May 2023

The 83kg class is hotly anticipated.  Incoming world champion Delaney Wallace will have to face fast-improving Brit, Jurins Kengamu on Day 4 of Classic Worlds out in beautiful Malta.  Let's take a look at the nominations:

Delaney Wallace   USA   835kg
Jurins Kengamu   GBR   820.5kg
Edoardo Mazzucchielli   ITA   800kg
Nick Manders   CAN   791kg
Adam Jansson   CAN   791kg

Wallace put in a show stopping performance at Sheffield back in March, narrowly missing the deadlift that would have taken the 83kg total world record.  Exactly one week previously, European Champion, Kengamu, had put in the day of his life at British nationals, hitting easy lifts and moving himself up to the top of the British rankings on GL points.  The nominations we have for them are the totals that they did at their respective competitions so they are fresh and new.   Kengamu had a lot left in the tank for that 820.5kg total.  But does he have enough?

Mazzucchielli took the silver medal at World Juniors last year, breaking the junior squat world record along the way.  He has since pushed that record up to 308kg before leaving the juniors forever at the end of last year.  He is already the top ranking lifter in Italy on GL points, even in his first year in the open.  He's adding kilos to his total at a phenomenal rate and is rapidly making his name as one to watch.

A little further back we have a re-match of the 83kg battle from Canadian nationals where sub-totaller Jansson and deadlifter Manders went head to head in a brilliant battle.  Manders won on 600g of bodyweight that day but really it's too close to call.

Another deadlifter lurks in the shadows.  Asein Enahoro of Hungary is nominated with the 780kg that got him the bronze medal last year.  He took the deadlift world record in Sun City with 345.5kg then surpassed it with 362.5kg for his second.  385kg to take the world title ALMOST went but he just couldn't lock it out.  We hear that he's been busy building a monster deadlift in the off season - can't wait to see it unleashed.

Will Wallace dance his way to victory?  Can Kengamu do enough?  Or will Enahoro just sail past right at the end?  Let us know what you think in the comments.
