Meghan Scanlon is the incoming world champion in the 63s but look who's back! Carola Garra is nominated for her first classic world championships since 2019 AND we have last year's 57kg world champion having gone up a class too! Let's take look at the top 5 nominations:
Carola Garra ITA 546kg
Chiara Bernardi ITA 525.5kg
Meghan Scanlon USA 520kg
Joy Nnamani GBR 480.5kg
Melissa Hexter GBR 480.5kg
Garra has been world champion both classic and equipped and she brought the gold medal back from The World Games last year. The 546kg total she is nominated with here was done at the UK Arnold in Birmingham last September but she suffered an injury on her final pull and we haven't seen her on the international stage since then. She did put up a 542kg at Italian nationals in February though so she's not far off!
Bernardi was the 2021 junior world champion and took the silver in Sun City last year. She is the current European champ in this class and her nomination is from Italian nats where she and Garra took the top two spots on GL points. She has added 20kg to her total in the last year and that squat just keeps on coming.
Last year, Scanlon beat Bernardi (and Scholten!) only on bodyweight. She didn't have the best competition in Sun City. She couldn't seem to get that massive bench working and that really cost her. However, she totalled 537.5kg late last year at a local meet so it's going to be a tough defence but she'll definitely be fighting at the front.
A little further back, we have two Brits that have both recently moved up from the 57s. Nnamani and Hexter went toe to toe at British nats in March. Nnamani did not have the best time on squats and had to rock out a 228kg deadlift to beat Hexter that day but she gave us a surprise at Sheffield, a week later, squatting in knee sleeves and belt for the first time. She totalled 500.5kg in the 57s there so don't count her out of the podium too quickly.
One thing is for sure, we will see some incredible action in this class and none of the world records are safe. Watch live at 7pm CET on Tuesday 13th June on The Olympic Channel and our Facebook page.
