IPF Bench Worlds - Equipped Women

First published on IPF social media on 4th May 2023

The World Bench Press Championships this year will be in the lush environment of Sun City, South Africa.  It's a fantastic host city and we are always assured of a warm welcome.

Big names to look out for here include powerlifting world champion, Zuzanna Kula of Poland, up in the 57kg class.  It's only a couple of weeks since she competed at the European Equipped so it will be interesting to see if that impacts her at all.

Japan's Kumi Mizoguchi is nominated comfortably in first place in the 76kg class.  However, we haven't seen her bench since the new rules came into effect - can she still bench 180kg+ under these new conditions?  Defending her world title will depend on it!

Ankie Timmers of the Netherlands is a familiar face in equipped lifting and although she has stood on the top step of the podium many times, she has never worn the gold medal from a world championships.   This could be a good opportunity to finally secure that prize as she is a long way ahead in the 84s on nominations.

Hildeborg Hugdal of Norway holds the title of the biggest female bench in the IPF - in three-lift powerlifting anyway.  Sandra Lonn has long held the overall mantle.  However, Hildeborg has crept every closer to that goal.  She is nominated here with 232.5kg, only 2.5kg away from Lonn's historic record in single lift bench press.  Let's hope we see an attempt at it!

Also keep an eye out for Chiyomi Sawa of Japan in the M4s.  She's attending her 21st World Bench Champs - she's won every year since 2005 - long may it continue.

Streamed live on our YouTube channel and our Facebook page.  Tune in for some of the biggest benches you will ever see.
